What is involved in studying for this qualification?
There are 8 modules in this qualification:
• Fertilisers and nutrients
• Plant classification and identification
• Grasses and seeds
• Weeds, pests, diseases, conditions, mosses and algae
• Turf Maintenance activities
• Maintaining turfgrass surfaces
• Health and safety
The estimated study for the course is 180 hours, with the course lasting a maximum of 11-months from the date of enrolment. Candidates are able to enrol on to another of these courses, for additional fees, if they do not complete the course within the required time scale.
Why should I enrol for this qualification?
This qualification is ideal for someone with several years of experience wishing to gain an initial formal qualification in turf maintenance, but who do not wish to attend a college course, or who do not want to create a portfolio of evidence. This qualification may also be beneficial for people who have completed other Level 2 qualifications and who wish to further develop their understanding of technical aspects of turf maintenance. There is no practical work involved with this qualification.
What are the entry requirements?
There are no entry requirements for this course, although you should have a keen interest in turf maintenance. Candidates should ideally have a minimum of one year’s experience to gain the most from the course.

How can it be studied?
The course will be through distance / home study learning, with tutor support primarily by email. A detailed syllabus and course study plan is provided along with a course textbook and specific web links which provide further learning material.
How is the qualification assessed?
The qualification is assessed by sitting two 1½ hour written examination papers; There are 3 assessment periods throughout the year: February, June and November.
What can I do after this course?
There are a range of progression opportunities, including the IOG Level 3 Technical Diploma in Turf Surface Management, or other relevant Level 3 qualifications.
Can I study just part of this course?
Yes. For people who just wish to focus on a specific part of this course we have five separate Level 2 Awards. This approach is also ideal for people who have attended one of the many one-day IOG training courses and who wish to learn and understand more on a particular subject. Please see the separate Level 2 Award for more information.
Should your studies overrun the prearranged time period given, you can pay £90/£180 for a further 3/6 months support, for every 3/6 months your studies overrun. Should you choose not to pay the short term extension fees, IOG support for your studies will cease.
