This new modular blended learning, Professional Body Certificated, course is the traditional one-day Foundation course made available to learners in another format. Learners have access to an online forum within each module and also a regular live tutor chat facility is available.

The course contents consist of 3 online theory modules (totalling 4 hours of learning):

  • Module 1: Requirements of the groundsman and pitch
  • Module 2: Equipment and machinery
  • Module 3: Materials

Plus 2 practical modules (each being about 2 hours of demonstration, explanation and learning):

  • Module 4: Spring and summer practical work
  • Module 5: Autumn and winter practical work

Course completion

When a learner has completed all 5-modules they will receive a Certificate of Course Attendance. They will also have an option of taking the online multiple choice end of course assessment (for which two attempts are permitted within the paid course fee). If this is achieved then they will be issued with a Certificate of Course Achievement.

Note:

Learners are registered at the IOG Milton Keynes HQ (this is purely an IT system management requirement), but will study the online either at their home, place of work, or similar location; the practical sessions will be arranged at various locations, dependent upon geographic spread and readiness of learners. Once registered on this system, learners will have a maximum of 11-months to complete the course programme, when their registration fee will end. (Please note that once a module has been commenced then there is a one-month time period to complete that module).

Module sequence for learners

It is recommended that the 3 theory modules are completed prior to attending any of the 2 practical sessions.

The practical sessions will be held at venues mostly throughout England, although the actual location of venues will depend upon the geographic spread of individuals registering for the courses and their availability for attending. Individuals may be expected to travel to adjacent counties to attend a practical session.

Practical sessions will be run when a minimum of 8 individuals have been allocated to a session. Learners may have to wait several months before the required minimum number of participants have indicated they are ready for a practical session within a defined geographical area.

Enrolment process

Once an individual has successfully registered for this course they will be enrolled onto the online learning system and a unique username and password will be emailed to them to enable the course to start. Once an individual starts an online module they have one-month's access to that module and must complete their study of that module within that period; after this time they will not be able to access that particular module.

Due to the relatively short length of each online module (maximum 1.5 hours), each individual is expected to complete each module within a few study sessions from the time that each separate module is started.

Once a learner has completed, or is nearing completion of, the 3 online modules they will contact the IOG on learning@iog.org. The IOG will attempt to arrange a practical session within a 50-mile radius of a learner's preferred location. The actual timing of a practical session will be very dependent upon the number of learners requesting attendance at a practical session at certain times.

Once a learner is placed at a venue for a practical session, they will have their access to the 3 online modules reactivated two weeks prior to attending the practical sessions to enable them to refresh their understanding of the course material.
