The going has been good for Richard Bradley, head groundsman at Great Yarmouth Racecourse, since he switched sports after starting his career at the local golf club. He got the seven-year itch while watching the horse racing from neighbouring Great Yarmouth & Caister Golf Club, where he served his apprenticeship. The grass looked greener on the other side, he laughs.

Chard RFC youngster given Twickenham opportunity

A 16-year-old from Chard RFC will be given the work experience opportunity of a life-time next weekend when he gets to grip with the hallowed turf of Twickenham Stadium.
Jamie Pike from Somerset will assist the Rugby Football Union's Head Groundsman Keith Kent as he and his team prepare and maintain the pitch during a busy weekend of rugby.

The Institute of Groundsmanship (IOG) has appointed two new independent advisors - Dr Kate Entwistle of The Turf Disease Centre and Ian Prescott, Principal of East Durham College - to provide strategic counsel to the IOG board of directors.
IOG chief executive Geoff Webb points out that the unpaid roles do not affect the structure of the IOG board and says “Kate and Ian will help the IOG build on its strengths as it takes on the challenges of meeting the needs of our members and continuing to build the profile of the grounds care profession”.

IOG Calls for New Umbrella Body to Speak As One Voice for Grounds Professionals

The Institute of Groundsmanship (IOG) has called for the creation of a new national federation to speak as one cohesive voice to Government, sports governing bodies and employers to best serve the interests of the 20,000 grounds professionals employed in the £580 million grounds care sector.
IOG Chief Executive Geoff Webb, says: It is clear that there are common issues in the industry, therefore the future as a whole should not just be about two organisations merging, but everyone working together. Each organisation would keep its own identity and represent its members, but an umbrella body allows for shared best practice and increased influence when speaking to Government and associated bodies.

Needless to say, we will be contacting the Department and the Youth Sport Trust to see how we might assist them in ensuring the new facilities are constructed to the necessary high standards.

The Institute of Groundsmanship have developed a unique system to provide learning for the award. All the knowledge required for each unit can be studied online. Each unit has a stand alone study course which can be accessed by anyone at home with internet facilities. This means that students can study for the award in their own time or time set aside by their employer that is convenient for all. Many ground-staff live and work well away from any land-based college and the opportunity of home study is very inviting.

The Institute of Groundsmanship (IOG) has appointed Kevin Duffill as Sales Manager. A new role at the IOG, Kevin’s remit is to support IOG services and maximise opportunities between the IOG, its corporate members and other key industry partners. Kevin will also take over as Sales Manager for the successful IOG Scotsturf exhibition, held annually in November at the Highland Hall, Edinburgh.
Aged 48 and based in Hockley, Essex, Kevin joins the IOG after 17 years with global consultants Accenture where he fulfilled a variety of roles across several commercial sectors, including leading conventional consulting projects but also taking responsibility for major business development initiatives.

Institute of Groundsmanship (IOG) stalwart Eddie Seaward, head groundsman at the All England Lawn Tennis & Croquet Club, Wimbledon, has been awarded a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) for services to sport in the New Year Honours List.
After 48 years as a ground professional – the latter 17 years as head groundsman at Wimbledon – Eddie oversees the preparation and maintenance of 41 grass and nine hard courts at the world renowned stadium, and in recent years has played a key role in the much-publicised multi-million pound redevelopment of its Centre Court.
