IOG Young Board host Schools into Stadia event at Stoke FC

The IOG Young Board of directors got off to a successful start to 2017 with its Schools into Stadia event being held at Stoke City FC’s Bet 365 Stadium.

The event saw 40 students from nearby Clayton School working their way around workshops, including mowing, fertilising, marking out and setting out sports pitches, grow lighting and pitch testing.

Ovewr seeing the workshops, members of the Young Board explained the groundsman’s job, the techniques used and how the jobs are carried out. Then, at pitch level, they helped the students to see, and in some cases put into practice, what they had learnt. This was followed by a stadium tour by the Stoke City community department, and presentations by head grounds manager Andy Jackson and Young Board chairman, Will Graves, as well as messages from Young Board directors (Lewis Pattinson, Liam Balmer and Luke Devlin) along with Young Board support group member, Elaine Harrison, and Young Board applicant, Luke Russell.

Each student was presented with ‘a guide to groundsmanship’ pack and grass seed courtesy Limagrain UK.

One teacher commented: “Today has been an excellent opportunity to show the students something they wouldn’t normally experience.”

The Young Board would like to thank Stoke City managing director Richard Smith and Andy Jackson and his grounds team for hosting, as well as sponsors Toro and Reesink TurfCare.

The Young Board is looking to host more events during the year. If you think you could act as host please get in touch via email: youngboard@iog.org or Twitter: @iogyoungboard
