IOG Volunteer of the Year gets EFL Cup Final Wembley experience

Award-winning volunteer Lee Watson says his Manchester United v Southampton FC EFL Cup Final pitch preparation experience this past weekend was “the best day of my life”.

Lee’s wife Desree contacted the IOG to ask if we could help organise a ‘Wembley experience’ for hardworking Lee, who’s volunteering dedication at Clay Cross Town FC in Derbyshire earned him the FA Volunteer of the Year title in 2015 and the IOG Redexim Charterhouse/Kubota Volunteer of the Year award in 2016.

“He’s a proper grafter,” says Desree. “He works full time as a ground works supervisor during the day, then picks up his son and heads to the club on evenings and weekends.

“I wanted to surprise him with something special for all his hard work and dedication to the club so I spoke to Lisa Gray at the IOG, she contacted Alan Ferguson and Karl Stanley at The FA and Wembley Stadium and got back to me straight away.”

During his ‘experience’ Lee helped Karl and his team check the mowers and set them for the cut, put the nets up, put the string lines away and then divoted the pitch after the game.

“It was absolutely brilliant – best day of my life,” Lee said. “I worked a 12-hour shift and it was worth every minute.”
