Work starts on Olympic Stadium field

The Olympic Delivery Authority has announced the start of work on the field of play at the 2012 Olympic Stadium.

Cranes and other equipment have been moved from the centre of the stadium in a bid to help create the right ground conditions for the running track and turf to be used for field events.

A drainage system will be installed in the coming months, while the base layers will also be laid ahead of work on installing the track and turf next year.

ODA chair John Armitt said: "Only two years ago, the stadium site was a flat piece of ground. A huge amount has been achieved since then with the venue now structurally complete and at its full height.

"Work is progressing on covering the roof and the first seats will be fitted this summer. The continuing progress means the stadium is still on track to be completed a whole year before the 2012 Games."
