White Bear Lake police officer shoots, kills bear on golf course

WHITE BEAR LAKE, Minn. — A White Bear Lake police officer shot and killed a wandering bear on the grounds of a golf course.

Police say the bear had been in a garbage container in an apartment building parking lot. When the bear crossed the street to the Manitou Ridge Golf Course about 7 p.m. Wednesday, the officer shot the animal.

Police Sgt. Don Twedt (tweet) says people had been coming out and trying to take pictures of the bear, and authorities were concerned the bear would become agitated.

Twedt says the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources removed the bear's carcass. He says the male bear was about 2 years old and ranged from 150 to 170 pounds.

The Twin Cities have had bear sightings recently in Blaine, Woodbury and Mahtomedi.
