Mill Hill Broadway woman celebrates Olympics volunteer role

A PROJECT manager from Mill Hill Broadway is celebrating after being named one of the first volunteers of the London 2012 Olympics.

Malene Sweeney, 33, will be an assistant to the national Olympic committee.

She said: “I really wanted to be a part of the team that shows how fantastic London is.”

Born in Denmark, Mrs Sweeney moved to London 11 years ago where she lives with her husband Paul Sweeney, 39.

She said: “Having been a foreigner in London, and having worked in hospitality for six years, I’m used to dealing with people from different cultures.

“I’m so excited – I want to start tomorrow.”

Mayor of London, Boris Johnson said: “Volunteers will provide welcoming faces around the venues to athletes, spectators and the world’s media when they descend on our great city next year.

“Combined with the forces of my London Ambassadors, part of our ever growing team London volunteer army, we will be in great shape to give people coming to the capital in 2012 a truly unforgettable experience.”

Around 70,000 volunteers are needed for the Olympic and Paralympic Games and interviews for places will continue until March 2012.
