About the Course
This course, endorsed by the Institute of Groundsmanship (IOG), will introduce the candidate to the science and management practices for the establishment and maintenance of natural grass surfaces used for sport. A mixture of theory, practical examples and case studies will be used throughout the delivery and teaching. Suitable for the anyone looking to gain access to the industry, professionals looking to enrich their knowledge, current grounds staff and greenkeepers, from a range of sports and leisure facilities including those looking after parks and other areas of greenspace. Students who successfully complete the course will be presented with an Institute of Groundsmanship (IOG) Certificate.

• Species Selection and Evaluation
Soils and Rootzone
• Soil Types and Classification.
• Soil chemical and physical properties.

Turf Maintenance Practices
• Turf Establishment.
• Mowing.
• Fertiliser Application.
• Aeration.
• Irrigation.
• Supplementary practices e.g. topdressing, Scarification and Rolling.
• Effects upon the Grass Plant and Sward Cover.

Progression
An advanced course incorporating management aspects is planned and will be suitable for completing candidates who wish to further their knowledge
Additional information
Although course notes will be provided candidates will need to bring some writing materials and equipment. Some sessions will involve outdoor fieldwork for identification and evaluation of surfaces and their characteristics. Outdoor clothing and suitable footwear is advisable for fieldwork.
The duration of the course is 36 weeks but will not run during the scheduled College Easter and Summer breaks. The exact dates can be flexible and will be confirmed to suit the group at the start of the course by the tutor. The expected end date will be late December 2012.
