Top apprentices win awards at Sparsholt College event

Jake Cornish has won an apprentice of the year award at a celebration event thrown by Sparsholt College

Cornish, who works for Snow Garden Maintenance in Crowthorne, was one of 71 apprentices and 19 work-based learners to train in horticulture and other sectors.

Robert Donnelly, head greenkeeper for Woolston & District Bowling Club, won the award for work-based learner of the year.

Tim Ponsford, who runs the apprenticeship programme for Sparsholt College, said: "Jake was a terrific learner. We received good feedback from his employer, tutor and assessor.

"As a mature learner, Robert used his knowledge and experience from his time in the army to achieve his qualification very quickly. He is now progressing on to the level 3 diploma and is committed to achieving this within a year."

Sparsholt College director of commercial services Ralph Stratton added: "Apprenticeships and work-based learning have never been more relevant to individuals and to employers.

"Apprenticeships are now the preferred Government training model because they enable companies to upskill their employees in a meaningful and relevant way."
