As well as offering unparalleled outdoor adventure facilities, Plas y Brenin plays a vital role in the work of several Sport England-funded national governing bodies (NGBs), including the British Canoe Union and the British Mountaineering Council. The centre offers world-renowned training courses and is responsible for over a third of all outdoor qualifications gained in the UK.
Like all Sport England’s National Sports Centres, Plas y Brenin plays a vital role in the facility infrastructure, balancing elite and community usage, as well supporting the work, and in particular the instructor training, of NGBs.
The appointment of the Mountain Training Trust to continue managing the centre follows an intensive strategic review and competitive tender process.
Sport England’s Chair, Richard Lewis, said: “Our partnership with the Mountain Training Trust stretches back over more than a decade and we have been consistently impressed with their professional and expert approach to outdoor sport. It is typical of the organisation that their new bid offered even better value and fresh ideas to further improve the sporting experience on offer at Plas y Brenin.”
Among the improvements planned for the coming months are new mountain biking routes and training courses as well as an expansion of the orienteering opportunities on offer.
Martin Doyle, Chief Executive of the Trust, said: “The Mountain Training Trust has managed Plas y Brenin with the intention of serving the needs of the key governing bodies and their participants and ensuring there are sufficient coaches instructors and leaders available for good quality and safe delivery in the outdoor sector. MTT is very pleased to be reappointed by Sport England to manage the centre with a new long term contract and is confident that the security it brings will ensure we continue to enhance the reputation of Plas y Brenin and continue to make its work relevant to hillwalkers, climbers, canoeists and cyclists.”
