Leading figures from horticulture recognised in New Year Honours List

Linda Phillips, the founder and director of the Roots & Shoots charity, based in Lambeth, south London, has been awarded an MBE in the New Year Honours List for services to young people.

Capel Manor College chair of governors Malcolm Parkinson, a former B&Q marketing director, was also awarded an MBE. Olympic Delivery Authority chairman John Armitt was knighted for services to engineering and construction.

Royal Victoria Medals were awarded to David Benefer, glasshouses manager at the Sandringham Estate; Graham Stone, a horticulturalist at the Crown Estate in Windsor; and Marion Cox, a part-time gardener working at Highgrove House.

Roy Crouch, formerly Whitehall Streetscape project manager at the Cabinet Office, was made OBE, as was botanical art collector Dr Shirley Sherwood.

Oak Tree Farm co-founder Monica Moreton was awarded an MBE. The Staffordshire farm provides training and employment opportunities in horticulture and farming for adults with learning disabilities.
