Palmerston Park in turf war for national prize

PALMERSTON Park is in line for a top national award.

The football pitch is in a turf war with Greenock Morton’s Cappielow as the two finalists in the first division pitch of the year.

Referees rated football grounds across Scotland throughout the footballing season with those scoring highly going on to be shortlisted and judged.

It is the first time Queens’ pitch has made it to the final stage of the competition.

And now finalists Palmerston and Cappielow will go head to head with the winner being announced at the Institute of Groundsman Scotsturf show in November.

Head groundsman Kevin McCormick said: “It’s nice to get this sort of recognition for the work that gets put in throughout the season.

“Usually you only hear about football pitches when something is wrong.

“We usually finish around mid-table and this is the first time we’ve got to the final, so we’re obviosuly doing something right!

“But Morton have won it for the last couple of years, so we’ll just have to wait and see what happens.”
