Joanna Lumley to front National Lawns Week

Actress Joanna Lumley launched Britain's first National Love Your Lawn week held from May 7-15

National Love Your Lawn week has been designated as the week to focus the nation’s attention on lawns.

An estimated half a million lawns have been lost in the UK in the last 25 years to make way for decking and for off-street parking for cars.

Lawn care company Green Thumb is sponsoring the week, which will see events and promotional articles in the media.

Lumley said: "For many of us, our fondest childhood memories involve a lawn; long summer afternoons, the hum of lawn mowers, the aroma of freshly cut grass.

"The lawn has an integral role in our heritage – it’s as much a part of British life as strawberries and cream.

"Yet while we invest so much money on the appearance of the interior of our homes, all too often we give little regard to the greenery outside. This seems wrong, especially as more people see the outside of our homes than the inside!

"Of course, keeping lawns in pristine condition throughout the year is not easy given our British climate, in fact, the recent harsh winters, together with an increasing trend to patio over lawns or install wooden decking, have left Britain’s lawns at their lowest ebb.

"If we want future generations to share our memories of long summer afternoons in the garden we need to act now to ensure the survival of one of our greatest assets – the Great British lawn."
