Green-fingered council workers receive top honours from Royal Horticultural Society

Three city council workers who have dedicated a combined 120 years to horticulture have received one of the most prestigious awards in their field.

Grounds maintenance officer Jake Gellatly and gardeners Melvin Morrice and David Park each received long-service medals from the Royal Horticultural Society recognising their "continuous practical horticultural employment as a gardener" over a 40-year period. They were presented with their accolades during a ceremony before today's [01 November] meeting of the council's Housing and Environment Committee. Retired council area officer Terry Stott and former gardener Robert Benton have also received the prestigious award from the RHS.

Aberdeen City Council Director of Housing and Environment Pete Leonard said: "This is the most prestigious service award that can be awarded in the horticultural field and it is highly regarded throughout Britain. The fact that a total of five council staff and former staff received this prominent award is an excellent reflection of the dedication, professionalism and commitment demonstrated by these employees."

Committee convener Councillor Aileen Malone said: "Jake, Terry, Melvin, Robert and David have to be commended for their outstanding work in their field. They have shown a real passion and commitment for the job and that is reflected in this prestigious accolade bestowed upon them by the Royal Horticultural Society."

City council environmental operative Norman Gerrard was also praised at today's ceremony, after receiving a Spirit of the Community prize for a near-40-year career helping to keep the streets of Garthdee and beyond clean. Waste strategy officer Laura Blair was also commended today. She was named Young Recycler of the Year at the Scottish Waste and Resources Conference awards in Glasgow last month. Today's award ceremony also provided an opportunity to praise electrician Norman Smith who is retiring after 48 years with the council. Committee members also heard of Aberdeen's success in this year's Beautiful Scotland campaign.

Councillor Malone added: "This has been a hugely successful period for the council and its employees and news of these awards and milestones show what a dedicated workforce we have. It is only right that we celebrate our successes."
