Award-winning groundsman Brian Hellers currently cuts the grass at the Old Bury Road ground with a 13-year-old household mower. Club fundraiser Nigel Wallace stressed how welcome Havebury’s Community Investment Fund (CIF) donation has been as a result for Brian and the club’s teams, which include an under-10s side.
Nigel, who runs the Cock Inn pub in the village, said: “Our current equipment is on its last legs so we are extremely grateful to Havebury – they have been brilliant and couldn’t have been more helpful throughout this process. We need £2,500 in total so we’ve still got some way to go and are currently waiting on the results of another grant application.
“When we do get the mower, it will make life so much easier for Brian. He was named groundsman of the year in the Suffolk and Ipswich Football Association awards and has always taken great pride in looking after the ground.”
Chris Allen, independent chairman of the CIF group which decides on the applications, said the team had been happy to support Stanton FC. He said: “We often look to assist groups which help communities become stronger and healthier, and Stanton ticked those boxes. It’s a very progressive club with a wide catchment area so we considered it a very worthy choice.”
Havebury Housing Chief Executive Karen Mayhew added: “The club is a big part of village life in Stanton and we know the teams will benefit hugely from an upgrade in equipment.”
Havebury’s Community Investment Fund has given away almost £500,000 to 200 different projects since the fund was launched in 2002.
The partnership, which has offices in Haverhill and Bury St Edmunds, is dedicated to serving both the existing and future housing needs of people in West Suffolk and the Cambridge sub-region. A charity and not-for-profit association, it currently manages 6,000 homes.
