Challenging Perceptions: One Year On

In 2006 the Institute of Groundsmanship [IOG] launched ' Challenging Perceptions' , a 6 year Strategy providing the IOG and its membership with a focus based on the ten key themes:

  • Improved Leadership and good governance
  • Health & Safety
  • Significantly improved working partnerships
  • Research and Development
  • Quality surfaces supported by quality services
  • The natural environment
  • Professional services, membership and communications
  • Events and exhibitions
  • Training and education
  • 2012 opportunities

We have, during the course of the last year, worked hard to develop and strengthen our organisation.  The New update document “Challenging Perceptions: One Year On” sets out what we have achieved to date and what our intentions are going forwards.  Some areas have progressed better than others and we continue to review and assess progress we have made and the direction in which we are going to achieve these objectives.  It is encouraging that the new Minister for Sport, Mr Gerry Sutcliffe, has followed on from his predecessor in praising the IOG and its membership for the progress we have made, and more importantly he has recognised the contribution that our profession makes to a successful sporting outcome.  In his own words:

“….The work conducted by the vast number of expert groundsmen and women across the country is valued by all those who play and compete on their world class surfaces….”

Gerry Sutcliffe, Minister for Sport 2007

As an organisation representing the profession we will continue to seek opportunities to raise your profile and to literally change perceptions of this Industry.  We hope that if you are not already an active member you will consider taking up the challenge and help us to improve your status, standing and profile over the coming years.  We recognise that there are challenges and obstacles that we as a Board and Executive are determined to tackle with a renewed vigour.   We encourage you to get involved - whether to pass on knowledge to others, represent the IOG in a voluntary capacity or simply to get across to the next generation the opportunities and enjoyment that a career in our profession really can offer.

Whether you agree or disagree with the direction we are taking we would love to hear your views and we welcome your ideas and input.

As you can see from the document though there is still much to be done regardless and to this end we have commissioned research to help identify the key issues facing the industry and to define the economic value of it.  The findings will help to identify and provide a greater focus for the IOG moving forwards.

Please feel free to send any comments to us at iog@iog.org.
